in Berwick plates,Comment of The Week

Share

I thought it best to clear a few things up from what I’ve been told by both Newcastle Council and Northumberland Council. The Berwick fiasco is at last coming to an end, there was a meeting two weeks ago between the two councils and it was decided that the judgement which was made last year should be upheld. It has to go in front of committee in a couple of weeks but that is just a formality.

What this means is that when you go to Berwick to renew your Hack plate you are going to have to prove that you will be doing MOST of your work in that area, which off course nobody will. BUT I hear you cry that won’t matter, I’ll just say I work in Cramlington, that will not work either, although Northumberland is now all one council as far as the taxi trade is concerned it is split into six different zones so if you say I work Cramlington you will need to be licensed in that zone NOT Berwick. It will also be a waste of time trying to lie saying that you work Berwick because the records that have to be held by the operators will say different and your plate would be revoked.

Nobody knows as yet the time scale of all this but from what I’ve been told I think it will be all finalised by next March when most Berwick plates are renewed.

From a personal point of view I think it’s about time, this fiasco destroyed the taxi trade in Newcastle and the sooner we get all these cowboys off our streets the better.

Well if it is true what is happening to the micky mouse plates then good!!. They should have not been in newcastle in the first place and why should we? “care about there reliance on there plate?” I dont as they did not care about money took out of my pocket the past 3 to 4 years. If the SLO in Berwick had listened to the operators when we asked him to suspend the issuing of these licences until the legallity of the matter was sorted out we would never had this debacle in the first place but he was a small man trying to make a big name to move on to bigger better things allegedly

@George Richardson, Maybe not to the 40 or 50 genuine drivers who actually operate within Berwicks area but to the private hire and hack trade in Newcastle they are Mickey Mouse plates

These plates are not mickey mouse to the operators who are plying their trade legally and properly inside their own licening district not all the holders of the Berwick licences are abusing the system

@shankys bitch, 2. There will inevitably be a large number of licensees who have been granted licences prior to the High Court judgment, and who now earn their livings or have built up businesses in reliance on those licences. The Council recognises that there is potential that those licensees may not have their licences renewed, if the basis on which their licenses were originally granted to them were to be changed so as to disentitle them to renewal. Notwithstanding, the Council believes it has a duty to:

• Balance the human rights of both applicants and the public with the need to protect public safety through a system of local control.
• Balance the rights of individuals to seek licences and employment whether in Northumberland or otherwise.
THIS IS THE BEST BIT:
3. The existing legislative provisions relating to the licensing of private hire vehicles, drivers and operators (LGMPA 1976) do not permit a licensing authority to restrict the number of licences that may be granted. It is therefore possible for an applicant seeking a licence who intends to use a vehicle for private hire remotely from the area of the relevant hackney carriage licensing zone to seek a licence from the relevant licensing authority.

@shankys bitch,
Your not that bright are you, TRY if you can to read the post in full, if you can’t manage that then get someone to do it for you, the parts you can’t understand please ask them to explain them to you as well. Maybe the part that says “It has to go in front of committee in a couple of weeks but that is just a formality.” might be a little clue why he was allowed to renew today.
