THE Daily Echo can today reveal the full scale of the city taxi licence lottery that is losing local taxpayers a fortune.

We can report that one cabbie is set to make a profit of £30,000 from a new licence issued by the city council that cost him just £180 a few weeks ago.

The news, that is bound to renew calls for the scrapping of the present taxi licence lottery system, comes at the same time that some city cab drivers are embroiled in a row over displaying the Flag of St George in their vehicles.

The news that cabbie Shouyb Mohammad Yaqub, who “won” his new licence in a controversial secret lottery last year, is now set to make tens of thousands of pounds in such a short time has caused more anger.

He has now put his money spinning taxi plate, together with a £25,000 seven-seater wheelchair friendly taxi, on the market for £55,000.
