While there, they discovered a fire escape had been blocked and the alleyway next to it was littered with cans and bottles. And, after a short deliberation, they decided to revoke the Booze Stop’s licence. That was despite objections from licence-holder Tasawar Hussain, whose brother Munawar works at the store and was the one convicted of attacking a teenager. Mr Hussain said the shop was the main source of income for his family, despite the fact he also works as a hackney carriage taxi driver in Newcastle.

North Tyneside Council swoop on illegal pick-ups
Magistrates have fined drivers of two private hire vehicles that picked up test customers in a North Tyneside Council clampdown.
Under national legislation private hire vehicles cannot ply for hire or stand at a taxi rank to attract business. They can only take customers who have booked in advance through the driver’s licensed operator.
This differs from the rules for taxis, who under their Hackney Carriage Licence can be hailed in the street and pick up customers from a taxi rank.
‘Drunk’ driver says he only ate liqueur chocs

Operation targets illegal cabs: London
The Metropolitan police service’s cab enforcement unit, part of the Transport for London-funded Safer Transport Command, made forty arrests during a recent covert operation earlier this month
Cab enforcement unit officers patrolled touting hotspots in central London locations such as the Haymarket and in prevalent areas in south London.
They dealt with touting, illegal operating, illegal plying for hire, and unlicensed drivers and vehicles………..
